Two new films opened in theaters, but both performed poorly. The first is the DC Extended Universe flick "Blue Beetle", which managed to dethrone "Barbie", but still managed to offer one of the worst openings in DC history. The other was the R-rated canine comedy "Strays", which also underperformed dramatically.

Warner Bros' superhero movie "Blue Beetle" opened in first place with a modest $25.4 million from 3,871 theaters, which is the second worst debut in the entire DCEU. The worst opening record belongs to "Wonder Woman 1984" with $16.7 million, but that film's debut was also hurt badly by the HBO Max day-and-date release strategy during the pandemic. "Blue Beetle" isn't doing much better overseas, either, with just $18 million, which brings the global debut to $43.4 million against a production budget of around $125 million. The film received a generally positive reception from critics (76% on Rotten Tomatoes), but a lukewarm reception from moviegoers ("B+" Cinemascore).
Now in its fifth week in theaters, "Barbie" took a step back and finished in second place with $21.5 million, but it only dropped 36% from last week. After 31 days, the film has grossed a total of $567.2 million domestically, $711.9 million overseas, and $1.279 billion worldwide.
Universal's "Oppenheimer" also fell from second to third place and grossed $10.6 million. The film declined only 43% in its fifth week, and has now grossed $285.2 million in North America and $432.6 million internationally. The worldwide total now stands at $717.8 million.
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" finished in fourth place with $8.4 million, dropping just 44.9%. The film's domestic total has reached $88.1 million after 19 days. Overseas it raked in $30.3 million, which brings the global total to $118.4 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the other new wide release, Universal's raunchy comedy "Strays", which opened with a disappointing $8.3 million from 3,223 theaters. Overseas it raked in $10.2 million from 21 countries. That adds up to $24.5 million worldwide against a production budget estimated at around $46 million. "Strays" received a mixed reception from both critics (54% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences ("B+" CinemaScore).
