Weekend Box-Office: BARBIE and OPPENHEIMER Shatter Expectations to Deliver Fourth-Biggest Weekend in History

Weekend Box Office Barbie Oppenheimer

The Mattel toy movie "Barbie" and Christopher Nolan's epic blockbuster biopic "Oppenheimer" have joined forces to generate a monumental weekend at the box office. Both films exceeded expectations and collected a combined $235.5 million in the United States and Canada, making this weekend the fourth highest-earning at the domestic box office on record. The other three record-breaking weekends are April 26-28, 2019 ($401.9M, "Avengers: Endgame"), December 18-20, 2015 ($313.0M, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens"), and April 27-29, 2015 ($312.3M, "Avengers: Infinity War").

Warner Bros' "Barbie" opened with a massive $155 million from 4,243 theaters, the biggest opening weekend of 2023, so far, ahead of previous record holder "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($146.3 million). Overseas the film raked in $182 million, which brings its worldwide total to $337 million. "Barbie" received rave reviews from critics (90% on Rotten Tomatoes) and was also well received by moviegoers as well ("A" CinemaScore).

The historical drama "Oppenheimer" scored an $80.5 million debut from 3,610 theaters, which is even more impressive considering this is an R-rated movie. It also raked in $93.7 million overseas, which adds up to a $174.2 million global debut, surpassing "Bohemian Rhapsody" ($124 million) as the biggest ever for a biopic. The film was very well received by both critics (94% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences ("A" CinemaScore).

The impressive fact-based drama "Sound of Freedom" scored another great weekend, finishing in third place with $20.1 million. The film dropped just 26% in its third weekend, and in just 20 days has already grossed $124.7 million against a $14 million production budget.

"Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One" is having a harder time at the box-office than initially expected. No doubt impacted by the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon, the Tom Cruise starrer dropped a steep 64% in its sophomore weekend, finishing in fourth place with $19.5 million. The decline is worse than the previous three "Mission: Impossible" movies. After 12 days in theaters, the sequel has grossed $118.7 million domestically and another $252.1 million overseas, which brings the global cume to $370.8 million.

The Top 5 is rounded out by Disney's recent flop, "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny", which lost another 45% in its fourth frame and grossed $6.7 million. The film's domestic total has reached $159 million, while overseas it raked in $176 million after 24 days in theaters. That's $335 million worldwide against a $300 million budget (before marketing costs).
