Weekend Box-Office: INSIDIOUS: THE RED DOOR Takes Down INDIANA JONES Sequel

Weekend Box Office Insidious The Red Door

Disney's "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" was replaced at the top of the box-office after only one week by Sony's new horror sequel "Insidious: The Red Door", which exceeded pre-release expectations. Also, the fact-based action drama "Sound of Freedom" starring Jim Caviezel offered a surprisingly strong performance and made it into the Top 5. However, the R-rated comedy "Joy Ride" tanked in its opening weekend.

"Insidious: The Red Door", the fifth installment in the successful horror franchise created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell, opened in first place with $32.6 million from 3,188 theaters. This is the second highest debut in the entire franchise, behind only the second film, 2013's "Insidious: Chapter 2" ($40.2 million). The new sequel also raked in another $31.4 million overseas, which brings its debut to 64 million worldwide. With a production budget estimated at around $16 million, the film is already turning a profit. However, it received a negative reception from both critics (36% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("C+" CinemaScore).

Last week's No. 1 movie, "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" dropped a steep 56% and finished in second place with $26.5 million. The film has grossed a total of $121.2 millon domestically and $126.7 million overseas, which brings its worldwide total to a catastrophic $247.9 million after 10 days in theaters.

Angel Studios' "Sound of Freedom" has become a surprise contender after opening on Tuesday, July 4th for Independence Day. The film scored $14.2 million on its opening day from 2,852 theaters, beating "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" ($11.6 million from 4,600 theaters) on that day. The film slowed down throughout the week, but still enjoyed a strong weekend, raking in $18.2 million over the 3-day frame, which brings its domestic tally to $40.2 million after just six days in theaters. The film cost around $14.5 million to produce. It received a very positive reception from both critics (76% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A+" CinemaScore).

The Disney/Pixar movie "Elemental" finished in fourth place with $9.6 million, dropping 20%. The film is holding better than expected and has managed to gross $109.1 million domestically, so far, and another $142.7 million overseas. This brings the worldwide tally to $251.9 million, surpassing last year's "Lightyear", which ended its theatrical run with $218.7 million.

The Top 5 is rounded out by "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" with $8 million, dropping 33%. The film has grossed a total of $357.6 million domestically, $284.6 million overseas, and $642.2 million globally.

The raunchy comedy "Joy Ride" failed to find its audience. It opened in sixth place with $5.8 million from 2,820 theaters. The film received rave reviews from critics (91% on Rotten Tomatoes), but a negative reception from moviegoers ("B-" CinemaScore).
