Weekend Box-Office: MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - DEAD RECKONING Topped the Charts But Also Fell Short of Expectations

"Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One" is this week's No. 1 movie, as expected, but the weekend numbers aren't quite as impressive as expected. The 5-day and international numbers, however, are pretty solid.

Read more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

"Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One" opened with $56.2 million from 4,327 theaters, which is 8% less than the debut of 2018's "Fallout" ($61.2 million). While the 3-day frame doesn't look great, the film raked in $80 million over the 5-day frame (it opened on Wednesday, July 12) which is actually a slight improvement over "Fallout", which grossed $77.5 million in its first five days.

Overseas, the film is doing better with $155 million, which brings the worldwide debut to $235 million. Business in China is slow, however, with the film only grossing $25.4 million, a massive drop from the $74 million debut of "Fallout". "Dead Reckoning Part One" received a very positive reception from both critics (96% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A" CinemaScore).

Angel Studios' "Sound of Freedom" continues to impress, rising from #3 to #2 this week. The film grossed $27 million over the weekend, a 37% increase from the previous frame. That's the best non-holiday sophomore weekend improvement ever for a wide release. It probably helped that the film expanded in 413 more theaters this week, raising the total number of screens to 3,265.

In third place we find the horror sequel "Insidious: The Red Door" with $13 million. The film dropped a steep 61%, but with $58 million in 10 days and another $64.5 million overseas, it's doing great for a movie that only cost $16 million to produce.

"Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" loses another 56% this weekend and finishes in fourth place with $12 million. The film has only managed to gross $145.3 million in 17 days, and another $157 million overseas. Because it cost $300 million to produce before marketing, it's going to lose a lot of money for Disney

The Disney/Pixar animated film "Elemental" is still doing well, or as well as can be expected after scoring the second-worst wide opening in Pixar history. The film rounds out the Top 5 with $8.7 million, dropping just 13% after 31 days in theaters. It grossed a total of $125.2 million domestically and another $186.4 million overseas, which brings the worldwide total to $311.6 million. That would be a nice big sum of money, if it weren't for the fact that the film cost $200 million to produce, and with marketing costs added will probably need to gross around $400 million to break even.
