The DC movie "The Flash" and Pixar's latest animated adventure "Elemental" underperformed over the weekend, falling below projections for the long Juneteenth holiday weekend. Another semi-wide new release, the slasher horror spoof "The Blackening" also disappointed.

"The Flash" topped the weekend box-office with $55.1 million from 4,234 theaters, not quite the blockbuster opening Warner Bros expected, and well below other DCEU titles, except for 2019's "Shazam! ($53.5 million). The film also raked in $75 million overseas from 79 markets (only $13.8 million in China), which brings its global cume to $139 million against a production budget of around $220 million. "The Flash" received mixed reviews from critics (67% Rotten Tomatoes), and a lukewarm reception from moviegoers ("B" CinemaScore).
Disney and Pixar are also having a bad day, as their latest $200 million animated feature "Elemental" opened in second place with a disappointing $29.5 million from 4,035 theaters, the second-lowest Pixar debut, ahead of 1995's "Toy Story" ($29.1 million). Of course, adjusting for inflation would take away that slight edge. It also earned another $15 million overseas, which brings its worldwide debut to $44.5 million. The film received a positive reception from both critics (76% Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A" CinemaScore).
"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" finished its third weekend in third place with $27.8 million, dropping 50% from the previous frame. The film has now grossed $225.5 million domestically, and another $209 million overseas for a global total of $479.2 million.
Last week's No. 1 movie, "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" fell to fourth place this week, grossing $20 million. That's a massive 67.2% drop, the steepest decline for any "Transformers" film. The film's domestic tally has reached $100.6 million, while overseas it raked in $174.3 million, which brings its worldwide cume to $274.9 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by Disney's "The Little Mermaid" live-action remake with $11.6 million, losing another 50% from the previous weekend. The film has grossed a total of $253.5 million in North America, $212.4 million overseas, and $466 million worldwide.
Lionsgate's horror comedy "The Blackening" opened in sixth place with $6 million from 1,775 theaters. While not an impressive debut, the film only cost $5 million to produce, so it should break even by next week. The film received positive reviews from critics ($86% Rotten Tomatoes), but a lukewarm reception from moviegoers ("B+" CinemaScore).
In other news, Wes Anderson's "Asteroid City" opened in six theaters and finished in tenth place with $790,000, scoring the best per-theater average ($132,211) since 2016's "La La Land" ($176,000).
