It was supposed to be a holiday blockbuster, but "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" failed to impress with a disastrous result for the final chapter in the beloved franchise. Things aren't looking good for this week's other new wide release, the animated film "Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken", which tanked over the weekend.

"Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" opened with $60 million domestically from 4,600 theaters, and another $70 million overseas for a worldwide total of $130 million. The previous Indiana Jones adventure, the much maligned "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" opened with $272.1 million in 2008 ($100 million domestic debut), unadjusted for inflation. The new intallment is expected to gross around $80 million over the extended 5-day holiday frame.
It's truly a disaster for Disney, since the film cost around $300 million to produce, before marketing costs. It's safe to say the film needs to gross at least $600 million in order to break even, but it looks like a tall order. Both the critical and audience reception have been mixed (68% on Rotten Tomatoes and "B+" CinemaScore).
"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" finished in second place with $11.5 million. After five weeks in theaters, the film has grossed $339.8 million in North America, and another 267.4 million overseas, which brings the global tally to $607 million.
Disney and Pixar's "Elemental" is enjoying another steady weekend, landing in third place with $11.3 million over the weekend, dropping only 39%. The film's domestic cume has reached $88.7 million, while overseas it raked in $98 million. That's a total of $186.8 million worldwide.
The R-rated comedy "No Hard Feelings" is holding in fourth place with $7.5 million, which brings the domestic total to $29.3 million. It also raked in $20 million from international markets.
The Top 5 is rounded out by "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" with $7 million in its fourth week. The film has now grossed a total of $136.1 million domestically, $245 million internationally, and $381.3 million worldwide.
Universal's animated film "Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken" opened in sixth place with $5.2 million from 3,400 theaters against a $70 million budget. It also grossed $7.5 million overseas. The critical reception was mostly mixed (66% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers enjoyed it ("A-" CinemaScore).
In other news "The Flash" continues to plummet, losing 67% in its third weekend, which follows the already catastrophic 72% decline in its sophomore frame. The film finished in eighth place (#3 last week) with $5 million. Its domestic total is now at $99.2 million, while overseas it adds another $146.1 million, which brings the global cume to $245.3 million.
