Weekend Box-Office: THE LAST MERMAID Remake Scores Lacklustre Memorial Day Debut

Disney's "The Little Mermaid" live-action remake came up a bit short this Memorial Day weekend. While it did gross a decent amount of money, it's not quite the blockbuster the studio was hoping for, failing to reach the $100 million mark for the 3-day weekend, and earning only the fifth holiday weekend of all time.

"The Little Mermaid" opened with $95.5 million from 4,320 theaters, and is expected to finish the extended holiday weekend with $118 million (fifth of all time). The film is also off to a disappointing start overseas, where it raked in only $68.3 million from 51 markets. The lowest market is China, with just $2.5 million. The film received mixed reviews from critics (67% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers mostly enjoyed it ("A" CinemaScore).

"Fast X" finished in second place with $23 million, dropping a steep 65.7% from its opening weekend. The film has now grossed a total of $107.9 million domestically, another $399.3 million overseas and $507.2 million worldwide.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" finished its fourth weekend with $19.9 million (-38%) and landed in third place. The film's domestic total has reached $299.4 million, while overseas it adds $431.6 million for a worldwide total of $731 million.

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" drops only 35% and finished the weekend in fourth place with $6.2 million. With $558.8 million domestically and another $717.8 million overseas, the film's global cume has now reached $1.27 billion.

The Top 5 is rounded out by Sony's R-rated action comedy "The Machine", which opened with $4.2 million from 2,409 theaters.

In other news, Liosngate's comedy "About My Father" opened in sixth place with $4.25 million, while the new Gerard Butler action thriller "Kandahar" made its debut in seventh place with $2.4 million.
