"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" topped the charts with $120.5 million from 4,313 theaters, a huge improvement on the original film, "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse", which grossed $35.3 million when it opened in 2018. The sequel has already grossed more than 60% of the first film's entire domestic box-office ($190.2 million) in just one weekend. The new installment also grossed another $88.1 million overseas, which brings its worldwide total to $208.6 million (the first film grossed $384.2 million worldwide throughout its entire theatrical run). The film received rave reviews from critics (95% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers enjoyed it ("A" CinemaScore").
Last week's #1 movie, "The Little Mermaid" finished its sophomore weekend in second place with $40.6 million, dropping a steep 58%, which is the second-worst Disney live-action remake second weekend decline ("The Lion King" dropped 60% in 2019). The film has now grossed $186.2 milllion domestically, and $140.5 million overseas. The global total now stands at $325.7 million, which is well below the $500 million break-even point Disney needs to meet in order to turn a profit on this one.
20th Century Studios' horror flick "The Boogeyman" opened in third place with $12.3 million from 3,205 theaters. It also added $7.7 million from international markets, which brings its worldwide total to $20 million. Not a very impressive opening weekend, but the film only cost $35 million to produce. The film received a lukewarm reception from both critics (62% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("B-" CinemaScore).
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" finished in fourth place with $10.2 million (-51%). The film has now grossed $322.7 million in North America after five weeks in theaters, and another $457.4 million overseas, for a global total of $780.1 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by "Fast X" with $9.2 million and a shocking 60% decline in its third weekend. The film has now grossed a total of $128.4 million domestically, $474.8 million overseas, and $603.2 million worldwide.
