The animated video game adaptation "Super Mario Bros Movie" just had an amazing sophomore weekend and is getting very close to the $1 billion mark. The Russell Crowe horror film "The Pope's Exorcist" and the horror comedy "Renfield" starring Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage both scored modest debuts.

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is holding in first place with $87 million, dropping just 41%. This performance ranks as the ninth sophomore weekend of all time. The film has so far grossed $347.8 million domestically and another $330.1 million overseas, which brings its worldwide tally to $677.9 million, making it the biggest release of 2023, so far.
Sony's "The Pope’s Exorcist" opened in second place with $9.1 million, ahead of projections of a $5-7 million debut. It's still not particularly impressive, but it did only cost $18 million to produce, and overseas it has already raked in $27.4 million in ten days. The film received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics (47% Rotten Tomatoes)
"John Wick: Chapter 4" finished its fourth weekend in third place with $7.9 million and a milder 45% drop. After 24 days in theaters, the film has grossed $160.1 million in North America, and another $189.6 million overseas, adding up to $349.7 million worldwide, making the fourth installment the highest global-grossing in the series.
Universal's R-rated "Renfield" made its debut in fourth place with $7.7 million, below pre-release projections in the $10-15 million range. It also raked in another $2.2 million overseas. The film received a mixed reception from both critics (59% Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("B-" CinemaScore).
The Top 5 is rounded out by the biopic "Air" with $7.7 million, dropping 47% in its sophomore frame. The film has grossed a total of $33.2 million domestically and $20.8 million internationally.
In other news, Crunchyroll's new anime film "Suzume" opened with $5 million in seventh place, Bleecker Street's R-rated comedy "Mafia Mamma" opened with $2.0 million in eighth place, and SDG Releasing's psychological thriller "Nefarious" debuted with $1.3 million in tenth place.
