"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" continued to dominate its competition in its second weekend, grossing $60.5 million, down 48.9% from last week. That's a softer drop than previous installments in the franchise, and even impressive among most MCU movies. The film has raked in $213.2 million domestically, and another $315.6 million overseas, which brings its worldwide cume to $528.8 million.
"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" continues to do well, finishing its sixth weekend in second place. The film grossed $13 million over the weekend, down just 30%, and it has now earned a total of $535.9 million domestically and another $674.4 million overseas. That's a worldwide tally of $1.2 billion.
The newly released comedy sequel "Book Club: The Next Chapter" opened in third place with a disappointing $6.5 million from 3,508 theaters, 52% less than the first film's 2018 opening weekend ($13.5 million). The film also raked in $3.1 million overseas. The new installment was not well received by critics (45% on Rotten Tomatoes), and the audience reception was lukewarm ("B" CinemaScore).
"Evil Dead Rise" finished in fourth place with $3.7 million, falling 36.6%. The film has grossed a total of $60.1 million domestically, and $61 million overseas, which adds up to $121.1 million worldwide.
The Top 5 is rounded out by "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret." with $2.5 million, which brings the film's North American total to $16.4 million.
In other news, the Ben Affleck starrer "Hypnotic" opened in sixth place with a catastrophic $2.3 million from 2,118 theaters. The film cost around $65 million to produce. It was a disaster with both critics (38% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers (C+ CinemaScore).
