Weekend Box-Office: DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Explodes With $185 Million Debut

Weekend Box Office Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness

Disney and Marvel Studios' new superhero flick "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" is the big hit that the MCU needed after a string of less impressive installments in the cinematic universe like "The Eternals" and "Shang-Chi". Although no records were broken, it's an impressive boost to an otherwise unimpressive weekend.

"Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" opened in first place with $185 million from 4,534 theaters. That's more than twice the opening of 2016's "Doctor Strange". It ranks as the 11th all-time opening weekend and seventh within the MCU, in both cases behind 2015's "Avengers: Age of Ultron" ($191.2 million). Overseas, the film raked in $265 million from 49 markets, which brings its worldwide cume to $450 million. "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" received a good-not-great reception from both critics (75% Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("B+" CinemaScore).

The animated film "The Bad Guys" fell to second place with $9.7 million and a 39.8% drop. The film's domestic total has reached $57.5 million, while overseas it has raked in a total of $90.5 million.

"Sonic the Hedgehog 2" finished in third place with $6.2 million, dropping 46.3% from the last weekend. The sequel's North American tally has reached $169.9 million after 4 weeks, while overseas it has grossed $179.5 million.

Warner Bros' "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore" continues to stumble. The film landed in fourth place with $3.9 million over the weekend, a 52.5% drop from the previous weekend. The film has grossed a total of $86 million domestically and another $277.7 million internationally.

The Top 5 is rounded out by the surprise hit "Everything Everywhere All at Once" with $3.3 million (40% drop). The film has so far grossed $41.5 million in North America against a $25 million budget. Overseas it added another $3.8 million.
