Will Ferrell has signed on to star in Warner Bros' "Barbie", the upcoming movie based on Mattel's iconic doll line. The film is directed by Greta Gerwig ("Lady Bird") and co-written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach ("Marriage Story").
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but sources say that it will have a "meta" component. Margot Robbie will play Barbie, while Ryan Gosling is set to star as Ken. Ferrell is said to be playing the CEO of a toy company that could be Mattel.
The cast also includes Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey and America Ferrera. Production on the film is already underway.
Robbie is producing the film under her LuckyChap Entertainment production banner along with Tom Ackerley. Mattel's Robbie Brenner also produces alongside David Heyman via Heyday Films. LuckyChap's Josey McNamara and Mattel's Ynon Kreiz will executive produce.
Ferell can next be seen in Apple's "Spirited", a modern musical rendition of Charles Dickens' holiday classic "A Christmas Carol".
