Weekend Box-Office: SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 Scores Massive $71 Million Debut While AMBULANCE Disappoints

Weekend Box Office Sonic The Hedgehog 2

The North American box-office was almost completely dominated by the video game adaptation sequel "Sonic the Hedgehog 2", which even managed to surpass the original film's debut performance. Michael Bay's new action thriller "Ambulance", however, delivered a disappointing opening weekend, signaling bad things for the future of non-franchise action films. Also, A24's "Everything Everywhere All at Once" expanded nationwide and scored some interesting numbers.

Read more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

Paramount's "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" opened with an estimated $71 million from 4,234 theaters, an impressive improvement on the first film's $58 million debut in 2020. It's also Jim Carrey's biggest domestic debut, ahead of the $68 million grossed by "Bruce Almighty" when it opened in 2003. The film also raked in another $37 million from 53 overseas markets, which brings its international total to $70 million, and $141 million worldwide. "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" received mixed reviews from critics (67% Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers generally liked it ("A" CinemaScore).

Last weekend's No. 1 movie "Morbius" dropped a massive 73% and finished in second place, grossing $10.2 million. The film has grossed a total of $57 million domestically, and another $69.3 million overseas.

In third place we find the adventure comedy "The Lost City" with $9.1 million in its third weekend, which brings its domestic total to $9.1 million (37.7% drop). The film has now grossed a total of $68.8 million in North America and another $9.7 million overseas.

Michael Bay's "Ambulance" opened in fourth place with $8.7 million from 3,412 theaters, which is well below initial projections of a $12 million debut. It's also Bay's worst debut ever, behind "13 Hours" ($16.1 million) and "Pain & Gain" ($20 million). The film also raked in only $22.4 million overseas. Its saving grace, is that it didn't cost much to produce, with a budget estimated at around $40 million. Ironically, this is one of Bay's better reviewed films (69% Rotten Tomatoes), and audiences enjoyed it ("A-" CinemaScore).

The Top 5 is rounded out by "The Batman" with $6.5 million, which brings its domestic total to $359 million. Another $376.1 million grossed overseas brings its worldwide total to $735.1 million.

"Everything Everywhere All at Once" expanded to 1,250 theaters this week, and finished in sixth place with $6 million.
