"Aquaman" and "Dune" star Jason Momoa is in final negotiations to star in Warner Bros' live-action "Minecraft" movie, which is based on the popular video game of the same name. The film will be directed by Jared Hess ("Napoleon Dynamite") from a script by Chris Bowman & Hubbel Palmer ("Masterminds").
"Minecraft" is a first-person survival game that allows players to use blocks to create structures and worlds. Developed and published by Mojang Studios across multiple platforms, the game debuted in 2011, and reached 100 million users in its first years. Microsoft acquired Mojang for $2.5 billion in 2014. Since its release, it has sold more than 238 million copies. "Minecraft Dungeons" is the latest installment in the franchise, and it was released in May 2020.
A "Minecraft" movie has been in the works for years, with Shawn Levy, Rob McElhenney and Peter Sollett in talks to direct. Steve Carell was attached at one point to star in the movie adaptation. Mary Parent and Roy Lee will produce, and Jill Messick will receive a posthumous credit for working on the film prior to her death in 2018.
Momoa also stars in the DC movie "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" and has recently joined the cast of "Fast & Furious 10".
