Eddie Murphy To Play Godfather Of Funk George Clinton In Upcoming Biopic

Eddie Murphy Picture

Academy Award-nominee Eddie Murphy is in early talks to star as Parliament-Funkadelic leader George Clinton in an upcoming biopic. Murphy also produces the film, which is said to be a passion project of his. The filmmakers are currently working to secure the rights with Clinton, before setting up writers and beginning to shop the movie.

Clinton is widely considered to be the Godfather of Funk, rivaling James Brown and Sly Stone as the foremost innovators in that musical genre. The film will chronicle Clinton's life and legacy, from his childhood in 1940s North Carolina, to the formation of his groundbreaking bands Parliament and Funkadelic in the late 1960s.

The movie will also explore Clinton and the bands' impact of the future of hip-hop and artists like Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Outkast and the Wu-Tang Clan. Clinton was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, alongside 15 other members of Parliament-Funkadelic. In 2019, he and those members were given their Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Murphy will next begin work on the Netflix comedy "You People" directed by Kenya Barris. He is also set to star in "Beverly Hills Cop 4" this summer. The actor currently has a three-picture, first-look film deal with Amazon Studios, which he signed last year.
