The superhero movie "Morbius" dominated an otherwise uneventful weekend at the box-office, but it didn't exactly break any records. Meanwhile, A24's "Everything Everywhere All at Once" broke into the Top 10, offering some impressive numbers at the specialty box-office ahead of its wide expansion next weekend.

Sony/Columbia's comic book movie "Morbius" opened at No.1 with $39.1 million from 4,268 theaters. It's not a terrible debut, especially considering it only cost around $75 million to produce, which is a somewhat small budget in the superhero business, but compared to other Marvel movies, even those produced by Sony, it's not particularly notable, either. For example, it's half the openings of 2018's "Venom" ($80.2 million), and its sequel "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" ($90 million). Overseas it raked in another $44.9 million.
The bigger problem is that the marketing costs for "Morbius" were probably higher than usual, considering its many COVID-related delays, which means it's going to need a solid hold in the coming weeks in order to prove profitable for the studio. Word-of-mouth is not going to help much as the film was ravaged by critics (17% on Rotten Tomatoes) and didn't to well with audiences either ("C+" CinemaScore).
Paramount's "The Lost City" dropped to second place with $14.8 million, losing 52% compared to its opening wekend. Its domestic total has reached $54.3 million, while overseas it grossed $7 million.
"The Batman" finished in third place with $10.8 million, dropping 47%. The film has grossed a total of $349 million in North America, and $361.5 million overseas. The film is, so far, the highest grossing release of 2022.
In fourth place we find "Uncharted" with $3.6 million. The film dropped just 28%. Its domestic earnings have reached $138.9 million, while internationally it has grossed $234.2 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the anime film "Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie" with $1.9 million. The film has dropped a steep 57%. Its domestic tally has reached $29.6 million.
At the specialty box-office, "Everything Everywhere All at Once" expanded into a total of 38 theaters and grossed $1 million over the weekend, finishing in tenth place. The film's $26,631 per-screen average is still the best at the box-office for the second straight weekend, after last week it scored $51,131 per-screen average, which was the biggest of 2022, so far, and the fourth of the pandemic era.
