Weekend Box Office: DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Shatters Records With $211 Million Debut

Everybody expected "Deadpool & Wolverine" to be huge, but it ended up blowing everyone's expectations out of the water along with several records. While superhero fatigue is a real concern for studios these days, this movie proved that the right formula of characters and actors can still bring people to theaters. The MCU has now become the first film franchise to cross the $30 billion mark worldwide across 34 titles. The newly released female-driven comedy "The Fabulous Four", however, tanked under the pressure of so many high-grossing summer blockbusters and animated movies.

Read more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

"Deadpool & Wolverine" opened in first place with $211.4 million from 4,210 theaters. Overseas it raked in another $233.1 million for a massive $444.5 million worldwide debut, the biggest of 2024, as well as the biggest since 2022's "Avatar: The Way of Water". Domestically it ranks as the sixth-best debut of all time, ahead of 2015's "Jurassic World" ($208.8 million) and behind "Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi" ($220 million).

The superhero comedy threequel broke the records of highest R-rated debut of all time both domestically and globally, and highest July opening weekend of all-time domestically, beating "The Lion King" remake ($191.8 million). It's also the largest debut ever for Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy, as well as the best opening of the "Deadpool" series. The original "Deadpool" opened with $132.4 million in 2016, while the first sequel scored a $125.5 million debut in 2018. "Deadpool & Wolverine" cost about $200 million to produce, and the promotional campaign cost around $135 million, so after only three days in theaters it's already turning a profit.

"Deadpool & Wolverine" was well received by critics (78% on Rotten Tomatoes), and moviegoers seem to have enjoyed it ("A" CinemaScore). I'm not sure a movie like this needs word-of-mouth, but a good grade definitely means that it will do well in the coming weeks.

"Twisters" dropped to second place in its sophomore weekend, raking in $34.9 million, which is a 56.9% decline from its opening weekend. Overseas it grossed another $11.1 million from 76 markets. The film has now grossed a total of $154.6 million domestically and $66.1 million internationally, which adds up to $220.7 million worldwide.

In third place we find "Despicable Me 4" with $14.5 million in its fourth weekend. This brings the film's domestic total to $291.3 million, while overseas it raked in $387.9 million. The worldwide total now stands at $679.3 million.

"Inside Out 2" finished its seventh weekend in fourth place with $8.6 million, down just 32.8%. The domestic tally has reached $613.7 million, and the international cume is now at $893 million. The animated sequel has grossed a massive $1.5 million worldwide.

The Top 5 is rounded out by the acclaimed horror film "Longlegs" with $6.7 million. The film dropped a soft 43.4% in its third week, and has now grossed a total of 58.6 million in North America. Internationally it adds another $8.2 million.
