Omar Apollo to Make Acting Debut In Luca Guadagnino's QUEER

Singer/songwriter Omar Apollo is set to star in Luca Guadagnino's "Queer", an indie drama based on the 1985 semi-autobiographical novel by William S. Burroughs. The adaptation is penned by American playwright and "Challengers" scribe Justin Kuritzkes. The cast also includes Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey ("Outer Banks").

Set in Mexico City in the 1940s, the film follows the story of Lee (Craig), Burroughs' alter ego, who lives among American college students and bar owners living off part-time jobs and GI Bill benefits following World War II. The book's themes touch on sex and drug abuse, with the protagonist becoming infatuated with a younger, discharged American Navy serviceman named Allerton (Starkey). Allerton is a drug user, who, though indifferent to Lee's advances, eventually relents.

The film will premiere at the 81st edition of the Venice Film Festival, running from August 28 to September 7.

Apollo, recently released his sophomore album "God Said No". He has a Grammy Best New Artist nomination. Apollo also discussed his own on-screen interests in an interview:
"I feel like I need a little more training and studying when it comes to [acting and screenwriting]. With music, I fixate on [a producer or artist] and go through their whole discography, so I plan to take a similar approach with film… I’ve been doing music for almost 10 years, and only now am I feeling completely confident in my abilities. I have so many ideas that I would love to actualize in film one day, but I’m not rushing the process."
