Legendary's highly anticipated "Street Fighter" movie will be released in theaters on March 20, 2026 by Sony. The film is co-developed and produced with Japanese game distributor Capcom.
Legendary acquired the film and television rights to the highly popular gaming series in 2023. Since the franchise launched in 1987, "Street Fighter" has sold over 49 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the most well-known and highest-grossing video game franchises of all time. The franchise includes other games, spin-offs and crossovers featuring characters like Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile and M. Bison. The most recent edition, "Street Fighter 6", was released last year.
This is not the first big screen adaptation of the video game series. Universal released the 1994 movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen and Raul Julia, and 20th Century Fox adapted the franchise into the 2009 movie "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li". Both were critical and commercial failures.
Earlier this month "Street Fighter" had lost directors Danny and Michael Philippou ("Talk to Me") due to scheduling issues. The Philippous' next project will be the A24 film "Bring Her Back" starring Sally Hawkins and Billy Barratt.
