Weekend Box-Office: DESPICABLE ME 4 Conquers July 4 Holiday Frame

Weekend Box Office Despicable Me 4

Universal and Illumination's "Despicable Me 4" exploded at the box-office over the 4th of July weekend and replaced "Inside Out 2" as the weekend box-office champion. The slasher horror "MaXXXine" scored a decent debut, but the faith-based drama "Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot" failed to impress.

"Despicable Me 4" topped the charts with $75 million over the weekend, and an impressive $122 million for the 5-day holiday frame. That's an improvement over the $99 million of "Despicable Me 3", but much less than Minions" ($145.5 million), "Despicable Me 2" ($143 million) and "Minions: The Rise of Gru" ($140.6 million). The film also raked in $108.3 million from overseas markets, for a worldwide total of $230.9 million. The movie's $100 million production budget is also cheaper than that of rival studio Pixar. The film received mixed reviews from critics (53% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers enjoyed it ("A" CinemaScore).

"Inside Out 2" stepped back to second place with $30.3 milion, down 47.3% from the previous frame. The film has now grossed $534.1 million domestically and $685.6 million overseas, which adds up to $1.2 billion worldwide.

The sci-fi horror film "A Quiet Place: Day One" finished its second weekend in third place with $20.6 million, a 60.5% decline from its opening weekend. The film's domestic total has reached $93.9 million, while overseas it adds another $83.8 million for a worldwide total of $177.7 million.

Ti West's horror film "MaXXXine", the final chapter in the filmmaker's "X" trilogy, opened in fourth place with $6.7 million from 2,450 theaters. It doesn't look like much, but it is an improvement over the opening weekends of "X" ($4.2 million) and "Pearl" ($3.1 million), and it's the fifth best A24 debut, below "The Green Knight" ($6.7 million), and ahead of "Midsommar" ($6.5 million). It also helps a lot that the movie only cost $2 million to produce. "MaXXXine" was well received by critics (74% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience reception was lukewarm ("B" CinemaScore).

The Top 5 is rounded out by "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" with $6.6 million, down 35.7% from last week. After a month in theaters, the film has grossed a total of $177.4 million and $182.8 million overseas, for a worldwide total of $360.2 million.

In other news, the faith-based drama "Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot" scored a very weak debut in seventh place, grossing $3 million from 2,200, which brings its total to $6.6 million after 4 days in theaters.
