Weekend Box-Office: DESPICABLE ME 4 Still on Top While LONGLEGS Makes Explosive Debut In Second Place

Weekend Box Office Despicable Me 4 Longlegs

While "Despicable Me 4" still dominates the weekend box-office and crossed the $200 million mark, the newly released low-budget horror flick "Longlegs" surprised everyone with an impressive and unexpected debut. In an unpleasant turn of events, Greg Berlanti's Moon landing rom-com "Fly Me to the Moon" bombed spectacularly.

"Despicable Me 4" is still the box-office king with $43.5 million over the weekend, down 41.9% from last weekend. The film has now grossed $210 million domestically and another $224.4 million overseas. The worldwide tally has reached $434.4 million.

The horror film "Longlegs" opened in second place with $22.4 milion from only 2,510 theaters, which is spectacular. This is a record for indie distributor Neon, whose viral marketing campaign similar to that of "The Blair Witch Project" definitely helped generate word-of-mouth. Even more impressive is that the movie cost under $10 million to produce, and another $10 million to market. "Longlegs" received rave reviews from critics (87% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience reception was pretty negative ("C+" CinemaScore).

"Inside Out 2" finished its fifth week in third place with $19.9 million. That's a 34.1% decline from the previous frame, and it brings the film's domestic total to $571.8 million. Overseas it adds another $776.8 million for a worldwide total of $1.34 billion.

In fourth place we find the sci-fi horror prequel "A Quiet Place: Day One" with $11.3 million, down 44.9%. The film has now grossed $115.7 million in North America and $104.5 million internationally. That adds up to $220.2 million worldwide.

The Top 5 is rounded out by "Fly Me to the Moon" starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum. Star power did not help this movie, because it tanked with $9.4 million from 3,356 theaters. What makes it worse is the fact that it cost $100 million to produce, a ridiculously bloated budget for a movie of this kind. The critical reception for "Fly Me to the Moon" was mostly mixed (66% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers mostly enjoyed it ("A-" CinemaScore).
