Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr. will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this time as a villain. The Marvel veteran will star as Doctor Doom in the upcoming movie "Avengers: Doomsday", which will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo ("Avengers: Endgame", "Avengers: Infinity War", "Captain America Winter Soldier ", "Captain America Civil War"). The directing duo will also helm the next Avengers movie titled "Avengers: Secret Wars".
"Doomsday" will introduce the character Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom, played by Downey Jr. Many fans were expecting the actor to return to the MCU as fan-favorite Tony Star/Iron Man, so the announcement, which was made at this year's San Diego Comic-Con came as a big shock. Since Iron Man died at the end of "Endgame", Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has said that he has no interest in retconning the character's fate:
"We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again. We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way."Marvel was forced to change their plans for the first of the two Avengers movie, which was originally titled "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty", when they had to fire Kang the Conqueror actor Jonathan Majors after being found guilty of reckless assault and harassment in his domestic violence trial. Kang's storyline was tied off in the Season 2 finale of "Loki".
"Avengers: Doomsday" will premiere in May 2026, and will be followed by "Avengers: Secret Wars" in May 2027.
