It's debatable if David Gordon Green's "The Exorcist: Believer" is the big hit Blumhouse and Universal were expecting, but it did dominate the box-office this weekend. It was also the only new wide release this weekend. Next week, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concert film opens in theaters.

"The Exorcist: Believer" opened with $27.2 million from 3,663 theaters, which is the highest grossing debut in the franchise. However, if ticket prices were adjusted for inflation, "Exorcist: The Beginning", which opened with $18 million in 2004, would actually come out on top. Overseas the film added another $17.8 million for a global total of $45 million.
While the film only cost $30 million to produce, Universal spent a colossal $400 million to buy the rights to the property in 2021. The plan was to produce a trilogy. David Gordon Green's 2018 "Halloween" reboot opened with $76.2 million, so it's safe to assume that the studio expected a similar performance from "The Exorcist: Beliver" reboot. It also doesn't help that "Believer" received a very negative reception from both critics (23% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("C" CinemaScore).
Last week's No. 1 movie, "Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie" finished in second place with $11.7 million. The movie fell 48% in its sophomore frame, and earned $38.8 million after 10 days. Overseas it raked in $48.2 million. The worldwide tally is now at $87 million.
"Saw X" finished its second weekend in third place with $8.1 million, dropping 55%. That's actually one of the softest drops in the franchise, surpassed only by "Saw II" (-47%) and "Saw" (-39%). The film's domestic total has reached $32.5 million, while overseas it adds $11.3 million.
In fourth place we find the sci-fi epic "The Creator", which fell 57% and raked in $6.1 million in its second weekend. The film has now grossed a total of $24.9 million domestically and another $36.9 million overseas, which adds up to $61.8 million worldwide.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the biopic "The Blind" with $3.1 million, dropping just 28%, from its already impressive debut.
In other news, the re-release of Disney's "Hocus Pocus" finished in tenth place with $1.5 million.
