Weekend Box-Office: THE SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE Record-Breaking $377.5 Million Debut

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" has become the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time after just five days, demolishing the competition at the Easter box-office. Meanwhile the biopic "Air" directed by Ben Affleck and starring Affleck and Matt Damon, also scored a decent debut.

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" opened in first place with $143.3 million from 4,343 theaters for the 3-day weekend, and $204.6 million for the 5-day. The film surpassed initial projections of a $110-125 million opening, and is now the biggest video game adaptation ever, surpassing all the records set by "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" ($190.8 million domestically, $72.1 million debut). The film also opened overseas and raked in $172.8 million. "The Super Mario Bros Movie" received mixed reviews from critics, but moviegoers loved it ("A" CinemaScore).

John Wick: Chapter 4" finished its third weekend in second place with $14.6 million, falling 48%. The film has grossed a total of $147 million after 17 days in theaters. It also raked in another $157 million overseas, which brings its worldwide cume to $304 million.

Last week's #1 movie "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" landed in third place with $14.5 million, dropping a steep 61%. The film has grossed a total of $62.2 million domestically and $61.8 million overseas, which adds up to $124 million worldwide.

The biopic "Air" opened in fourth place with $14.4 million for the 3-day and $20.2 million for the 5-day. Overseas it raked in $10.5 million. The film received rave reviews from critics (92% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences enjoyed it ("A" CinemaScore).

"Scream VI" rounds out the Top 5 with $3.3 million. With $103.8 million domestically, the film has become the highest grossing installment in the "Scream" franchise. With another $57.8 million overseas, the film has now grossed $161.6 million worldwide, and will soon overtake the first three films.
