Weekend Box-Office: TOP GUN - MAVERICK Scores $151 Million Memorial Day Debut

Weekend Box Office Top Gun Maverick

After two years of delays, the sequel "Top Gun: Maverick" finally opened in theaters and scored a fantastic Memorial Day opening weekend. The animated film "The Bob's Burgers Movie", based on the hit comedy series "Bob's Burgers", also opened over the weekend with modest results.

Paramount's "Top Gun: Maverick" exploded in theaters with an amazing $124 million debut for the 3-day time frame, and an estimated $151 million for the 4-day holiday frame from 4,735 theaters. Overses it raked in another $109 million from 62 markets, which brings its worldwide cume to $260.5 million. This is the largest overseas debut ever for a Tom Cruise movie, and Paramount's second biggest, behind "Transformers Age of Extinction". This domestic debut ranks second among Memorial Day weekends, behind Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End", which opened with $153 million in 2007. The film received rave reviews from critics (97% on Rotten Tomatoes), and a fantastic audience reception ("A+" CinemaScore).

"Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" dropped to second place and grossed $16.4 million for the 3-day (49% drop), and is expected to rake in $21.8 million for the 4-day. Its domestic total has reached $375.4 million, while overseas it raked in a total of $497.9 million. The Marvel movie has surpassed Warner Bros' "The Batman" ($369.3 million) as the highest grossing movie of 2022, to date.

20th Century Studios' "The Bob's Burgers Movie" opened in third place with 12.6 million over the weekend, and $17.3 million for the extended holiday frame from 3,425 theaters. The film received a positive reception from both critics (86% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A" CinemaScore).

"Downton Abbey: A New Era" finished in fourth place after opening in second place last week. The film grossed $5.9 million over the weekend, dropping 63%, which is a steeper dive than the first film's -54% in its sophomore frame. The 4-day gross is estimated at $7.7 million. The film's North American total has reached $28.4 million after 10 days. Its international cume is now at $40.5 million.

The Top 5 is rounded out by the animated film "The Bad Guys" with $4.6 million for the 3-day and $6.4 million for the 4-day. The film has grossed a total of $82.8 million domestically and another $116.1 million overseas.
