New ALIEN Film In the Works From DON'T BREATHE Director Fede Alvarez With Ridley Scott Producing

New ALIEN Film In the Works From DON'T BREATHE Director Fede Alvarez With Ridley Scott Producing

A new "Alien" is in the works at 20th Century Studios, which will be written and directed by Fede Alvarez and produced by Ridley Scott, the director of the original 1979 film. Alvarez is best known for directing the 2013 "Evil Dead" remake, and the horror thriller "Don't Breathe".

Scott is producing via his Scott Free banner, and the movie is intended to stream on Hulu. An "Alien" series is also in the works from Noah Hawley at FX, with Scott in talks to executive produce. Alvarez's project is said to be a new take on the franchise, and will not have any narrative connection with the previous "Alien" films.

According to sources, Alvarez, who is a rabid fan of the franchise, first pitched an idea to Scott years ago, and that idea apparently made quite an impact, because Scott eventually called Alvarez last year asking him if he still wanted to do it. Obviously, the "Don't Breathe" helmer answered yes.

20th Century Studios division president Steve Asbell said they picked up the project "purely off the strength of Fede's pitch" and went on to say that "it was just a really good story with a bunch of characters you haven't seen before". Asbell also talked about streaming the projects on Hulu and how that allows them not to compromise their vision: "It's not a film that has to be all things to all people with those gargantuan budgets. They get to be authentically what they are. And this is closer to its genre roots."

The studio is also developing a new "Predator" prequel titled "Prey", wilch will also debut on Hulu this summer.
