JOKER Sequel Confirmed, Joaquin Phoenix to Reprise Lead Role

Joker Movie Joaquin Phoenix

Director Todd Phillips has confirmed today via Instagram that a sequel to 2019's "Joker" is moving forward. The filmmaker posted a cover of the script, which he co-wrote alongside Scott Silver, who also worked on the first film. The film will be titled "Joker: Folie à Deux", which translated literally means "shared madness" and is a medical term for shared delusional disorder. The post also included a photo of Joaquin Phoenix reading the script.

The first film, an origin story for the popular villain, was a massive hit for Warner Bros, grossing over $1 billion worldwide (highest-grossing R-rated movie of all-time). It was also nominated for 11 Academy Awards, becoming the most nominated comic book movie ever, and went on to win two Academy Awards (Best Score and Leading Actor).

A sequel has been discussed ever since the first film opened in 2019. "Joker" is not set in the same continuity as Matt Reeves' "The Batman". The latter featured the Joker played by Barry Keoghan in a cameo role.

Joaquin Phoenix isn't officially on board at this point to reprise the role of Arthur Fleck/Joker, but it has been reported that he is nearing a deal.
