Hayley Atwell Joins Tom Cruise in Next MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE Movie

"Captain America" star Hayley Atwell has joined the cast of the new installment in the "Mission: Impossible" series. The announcement was made on Instagram by Christopher McQuarrie, who has helmed and penned the scripts for "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" and "Mission: Impossible - Fallout". The filmmaker will return to write and direct the next two film in the action franchise that stars Tom Cruise as super-spy Ethan Hunt.

McQuarrie posted a photo of Atwell on top of an Impossible Missions Force binder and wrote "Should you choose to accept...", to which the actress responded, "Mission: Accepted. Though I'm not the sort to follow order..."

The yet-untitled "Mission: Impossible 7" is set for release on July 23, 2021. The eighth installment will follow a year later, on August 5, 2022. Both films will be shot back-to-back.

The six films in the series have delivered a total of $3.57 billion in worldwide box office. The last installment in the 23-year-old series, 2018's "Fallout", was the highest grossing film of the franchise with $791.1 million globally.

Atwell will also reprise the role of Peggy Carter, lending her voice to the character for the Marvel's animated series "What If?", which explores pivotal moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and turns them on their head, leading the audience into uncharted territory. The show is expected to be released in 2021.
