THE MATRIX 4 Greenlit With Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss Set to Return

Keanu Reeves And Carrie Anne Moss The Matrix 4

A new sequel to the highly successful and influential sci-fi trilogy "The Matrix" has been greenlit at Warner Bros. The announcement was made by the company's chairman Toby Emmerich.

The new installment will be co-written and directed by Lana Wachowski, and franchise stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively. There is no word on how the role of Morpheus will be handled, as Laurence Fishburne doesn't appear to be reprising his role.

Wachowski is writing the screenplay alongside "The Lazarus Project" author Aleksandar Hemon and "Cloud Atlas" author David Mitchell. Production is expected to begin early 2020.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute the film. In a statement, Emmerich said the following:
"We could not be more excited to be re-entering 'The Matrix' with Lana. Lana is a true visionary–a singular and original creative filmmaker–and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in 'The Matrix' universe.".
Wachowski also spoke about the sequel:
"Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I'm very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends."
The original "Matrix" film is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, which will be marked by special screenings at select AMC locations starting on August 30.
