"Crazy Rich Asians" star Gemma Chan is in talks to join Marvel's 25th film in the MCU, "The Eternals". Directed by Chloe Zhao ("The Rider"), the superhero film is based on the 1976 comic book series created by Jack Kirby. The screenplay is written by Matthew and Ryan Firpo. Barry Keoghan ("Dunkirk", "Chernobyl") has also joined the cast.
The film will focus on a race of ancient human beings, known as The Eternals, with fantastic powers and very long lives, who were created a million years ago by the cosmic entities known as the Celestials. At the same time, the Celestials also created the villainous Deviants, and the two groups have fought each other throughout history. The Eternals also warred with Greek, Roman and Norse deities before leaving Earth to explore the stars.
There is a bit of a confusion as to what role Chan will play in the film, since she already starred in "Captain Marvel" as Minn-Erva. It is unknown if she will reprise her role, or will play a different character. If the latter is true, she would be the first actor in the MCU to play two separate roles.
The cast already includes Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Ma Dong-seok, Lia McHugh, Lauren Ridloff and Brian Tyree Henry. Jolie is set to play Thena, an Eternal that has has super strength, speed and stamina, while Madden will Madden will be playing Ikaris and Hayek will play Ajak.
"The Eternals" will open in theaters on November 6, 2020.
