Amazon MGM Studios' R-rated romantic sports drama "Challengers" opened in first place with $15 from 3,477 theaters. This is the biggest opening ever for Oscar-nominated filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, and Zendaya's best non-IP live-action opening weekend. The film also raked in $10 million overseas. The film's budget was reportedly around $50 million. The film received rave reviews from critics (88% on Rotten Tomatoes), and the audience receptions was okay ("B+" CinemaScore).
Lionsgate's true story Christian drama "Unsung Hero" made its debut in second place with $7.7 million from 2,832 theaters, against a $7 million budget. The film received mixed reviews from critics (60% on Rotten Tomatoes), but a stellar reception from audiences ("A+" CinemaScore).
"Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" is holding in third place with $7.2 milion, down 24.8% from last week. The film has now grossed $181.6 million domestically and $337.7 million overseas. That's $519.3 million worldwide.
After two weeks at #1, "Civil War" has now fallen to #4 and grossed $7 million over the weekend. The film only dropped 37.6%, so it's still going strong. The North American total has reached $56.1 million, while overseas it raked in $15.4 million for a worldwide total of $71.6 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the horror film "Abigail" with $5.2 million, which brings the domestic total to $18.7 million, while overseas it adds another $9.8 million.
