Weekend Box-Office: CIVIL WAR Scores Record-Breaking Debut for A24 and Filmmaker Alex Garland

The polarizing R-rated dystopian thriller "Civil War" dominated the weekend box-office, snatching the throne from "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire", after the kaiju blockbuster reported disappointing numbers in its third week.

A24's "Civil War" topped the charts with $25.7 million from 3,838 theaters, a record-breaking debut for both the studio and the film's director Alex Garland. A24's previous highest opener was "Hereditary" in 2018 with $13.5 million, while for Garland it was 2015's "Ex Machina" with $5.3 million. The film's budget is reportedly around $50 million. "Civil War" was praised by critics (83% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience reception was lukewarm ("B-" CinemaScore).

"Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" lost the leading position in its third weekend, grossing $15.4 million, and suffering a massive 50.5% decline from the previous frame. The film has now grossed $157.9 million domestically and another $278.6 million overseas, which adds up to $436.5 million worldwide.

"Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" is holding in third place with $5.8 million, down 35.6% from last week. The film's domestic tally has reached $96.9 million, while overseas it adds another $63 million for a global cume of $159.9 million.

In fourth place we find "Kung Fu Panda 4" with $5.5 million. The film dropped a soft 29.2% in its sixth weekend, which brings the movie's North American tally to $173.6 million. Overseas it grossed $278.9 million. The worldwide total has reached $452.6 million.

The Top 5 is rounded out by "Dune: Part Two" with $4.3 million, down 41.9%. The film has now grossed a total of $272.1 million in North America, $411.8 million from foreign markets, and $683.9 million worldwide.

In other news, Mucho Mas Releasing's true story sports drama "The Long Game" opened in eight place with $1.3 million from 1,030 theaters, and Well Go USA's indie horror "Sting" made its debut at #10 with $1.2 million from 1,350 locations.
