"Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" still dominates with $31.7 million in its second weekend, down 60.4% from its debut. The film has now grossed $135 million domestically, and another $226 million overseas for a worldwide total of $361 million. It is already the second highest grossing MonsterVerse movie, behind only the 2014 "Godzilla", which earned $200 million domestically and $324.3 million overseas.
Dev Patel's action thriller "Monkey Man" opened in second place with $10.1 million from 3,029 theaters. Overseas it's not doing so well, with only $2.6 million from 27 countries. With a budget estimated at around $10 million, it should turn a nice profit. The film received rave reviews from critics (88% Rotten Tomatoes), but a lukewarm reception from moviegoers ("B+" CinemaScore).
"Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" finishes its third weekend in third place with $9 million, a 42% decline from the previous frame, which brings its domestic tally to $88.8 million. Internationally it adds another $49.3 million for a worldwide total of $138.1 million.
The horror prequel "The First Omen" made its debut in fourth place with $8.3 million from 3,375 theaters, which is somewhat disappointing. It also raked in $9.1 million overseas, which brings the worldwide debut to $17.5 million. While the film carries a low $30 million price tag, it might have trouble making a profit. "The First Omen" received mostly positive reviews from critics (79% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience reception was much less enthusiastic ("C" CinemaScore).
The Top 5 is rounded out by "Kung Fu Panda 4" with $7.8 million, down 24% from last week. The film has now grossed a total of $166 million in North America and $244.3 million from foreign markets, adding up to $410.4 million worldwide.
In other news, Fathom Events' faith-based romance "Someone Like You" opened in seventh place with a weak $3 million from 1,800 theaters.
