The MonsterVerse blockbuster sequel "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" dominated the weekend box-office with a better-than-expected debut, while last week's #1 movie "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" took a tumble.

It's no surprise that "Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire" is the No.1 movie at the box-office, but it did beat pundit's expectations with a $80 million debut from 3,861 theaters. The sequel was initially projected to gross around $50-55 million over the weekend. This is the second-highest opening weekend in the Warner Bros MonsterVerse, following 2014's "Godzilla" ($93 million), but ahead of 2017's "Kong: Skull Island" ($61 million).
So, far it's the second largest domestic debut of 2024, behind "Dune: Part Two" ($82.5 million). Overses, the film raked in $114 million from 64 markets, which brings the worldwide cume to $194 million against a surprisingly moderate budget of $135 million.
"Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire" received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics (56% on Rotten Tomatoes), but audiences mostly liked it ("A-" CinemaScore).
"Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" finished in second place with $15.7 million, a 65.1% decline from its opening weekend. That's a steeper drop than "Ghostbusters: Afterlife", which fell 45% in its second weekend. The new intallment has, so far, grossed a total of $73.4 million in North America, and $35.1 million overseas.
Despite tougher competition, "Dune: Part Two" is still going strong in third place with $11.1 million, down just 37% from the previous frame. The domestic total has reached $252.3 million, while the international total has reached $373.7 million. That adds up to $626 million worldwide.
In fourth place we find the animated sequel "Kung Fu Panda 4" with $10.2 million, which brings the domestic tally to $151.6 million. With another $195 million from foreign markets, the film has now grossed $347.2 milion worldwide.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the Sydney Sweeney horror film "Immaculate" with $3.2 million. The film has grossed a total of $11.1 million domestically.
In other news, Indian Telugu-language rom-com "Tillu Square" opened in eighth place with $1.8 million from 450 theaters, while the Hindi-language heist comedy "Crew" made its debut at #9 with $1.5 million from 486 theaters.
