The dystopian thriller "Civil War" managed a narrow victory against the horror film "Abigail", which was primed to dominated the weekend box-office, but fell short of predictions. The other new releases: Guy Ritchie's "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" and the anime film "Spy x Family Code: White" failed to attract moviegoers.

"Civil War" topped the charts in its sophomore weekend, grossing $11.1 million with the addition of 91 new theaters. The film has now grossed $44.8 million domestically. It also opened overseas, raking in another $4.5 million.
Universal's horror film "Abigail" opened in second place with a weak $10.2 million from 3,384 theaters, well below pre-release predictions that hinted at a $12-15 million opening. It's not a hit overseas, either, grossing only $5 million. The film cost around $30 million to produce, so it would need around $60-70 million to turn a profit. This is clearly a situation where a smaller budget would have been preferrable. Critics loved the movie (84% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience reception was just lukewarm ("B" CinemaScore).
"Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" finished in third place with $9.4 million, down a soft 39.2% from last week. The film has now grossed a total of $171.6 million in North America and $313.6 million internationally, which brings the worldwide tally to $485.2 million.
Guy Ritchie's WWII action comedy "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" tanked in fourth place with $9 million from 2,845 theaters, against a $60 million production budget. This is the latest in a series of disappointing box-office results for Ritchie. The film received a mixed reception from critics (72% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers generally enjoyed it ("A-" CinemaScore).
The Top 5 is rounded out by Toho's anime film "Spy x Family Code: White" distributed in the US by Crunchyroll, which opened with $4.8 million from 2,009 theaters. It ranks as the fifth highest-grossing Crunchyroll release.
