A new "Stargate" series has been officially ordered at Amazon. The project hails from Martin Gero ("Blindspot") who will serve as creator, writer, executive producer and showrunner. Gero is no stranger to the franchise, having started his career as a story editor on "Stargate Atlantis". Here's what he had to say about the project:
"Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, Stargate taught me everything about making television — it's written into my DNA. I'm beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who've kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one's for you. And for those that are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary."
Exact plot details are being kept under wraps. The series will be produced by Amazon MGM Studios and air on Prime Video. Executive producers also include Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures ("Obi-Wan Kenobi", "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters") as well as the 1994 "Stargate" movie's creators Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich. Longtime franchise creative leaders Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi will serve as consulting producers.
Nick Pepper, Head of US SVOD TV development for Amazon MGM Studios said the following: "'Stargate' is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity's place in the cosmos. In partnership with our extraordinary creative team of Martin, Tory, and Joby, we're honored to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience, one that honors the series' rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future."
The "Stargate" franchise originally started with the 1994 movie of the same name starring James Spader and Kurt Russell, which grossed $196.5 million worldwide. It was followed by the hit series "Stargate SG-1" that starred Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge. The show aired for 10 seasons between 1997 and 2007. It was followed by a spinoff show titled "Stargate Atlantis" that aired for five more seasons between 2004 and 2008, two direct-to-video movies and three other TV shows, with the most recent being "Stargate Origins" in 2018.
