Weekend Box-Office: THE FALL GUY Disappoints With $28.5 Million While THE PHANTOM MENACE Scores No. 2 Debut

Weekend Box Office The Fall Guy

The combined star-power of Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt wasn't enough to turn "The Fall Guy" into a bonafide blockbuster. The film topped the charts but fell below initial projections. The re-release of "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" scored a solid debut, and so did the small-budget horror film "Tarot".

"The Fall Guy" was a big gamble for Universal, costing around $150 million to produce, and so far it's not paying off. The film opened in first place, but only grossed $28.5 million from 4,002 theaters, while pundits predicted a $30-35 million debut. Even that would have been a pretty low debut for a movie this expensive. The film also raked in $36.9 million from overseas markets, which brings the worldwide debut to $65.4 million. "The Fall Guy" received a positive reception from both critics (83% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A-" CinemaScore).

The re-release of "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace" opened in second place with $8.1 million from 2,700 theaters, while internationally it adds another $6.4 million.

In third place we find "Challengers", which fell from first place and has raked in $7.6 million in its sophomore weekend. That's a 49.1% decline from its opening weekend. The film has grossed $29.4 million in North America and another $22.8 million overseas for a worldwide total of $52.2 million.

The horror film "Tarot" opened in fourth place with $6.5 million from 3,104 theaters, a solid opening for a movie that cost an estimated $8 million to produce. It also adds another $3.7 million from international markets for a total global debut of $10.2 million. Both critics and moviegoers hate the movie (12% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a "C-" on CinemaScore).

The Top 5 is rounded out by "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" with $4.5 million, down 37.7% from last week. The film has now grossed a total of $188 million domestically, $358.8 million internationally, and $546.8 million worldwide.
