Sydney Sweeney to Star in New BARBARELLA Film

Sydney Sweeny Picture

Emmy-nominated "Euphoria" star Sydney Sweeney is attached to star in and executive produce Sony's new "Barbarella" movie based on Jean-Claude Forest's French comic book series, which was previously adapted into the 1968 movie directed by Roger Vadim and starring Jane Fonda. Brad Fuller is also producing.

The film is currently in early development, with no writer or director attached. No story elements have been revealed at this point. The 1968 movie follows an astronaut from the 41st century who sets out to find and stop the evil scientist Durand Durand, whose Positronic Ray threatens to bring evil back into the galaxy. While not a box-office hit, the original film has since become a cult classic, and in 2020 the Forest estate announced plans for a new film.

Sweeney is also set to star in Sony's Marvel flick "Madame Webb" opposite Dakota Johnson, and the studio also acquired "The Registration", with Sweeney on board to produce and star. She recently finished work on the Tony Tost film "National Anthem", which also stars Paul Walter Hauser, Simon Rex and Halsey, and Tina Satter's debut feature "Reality".
