Weekend Box-Office: DON'T WORRY DARLING Scores $19 Million Debut and AVATAR Re-Release Takes $10 Million

Weekend Box Office Dont Worry Darling

Once again, it was a less-than-spectacular weekend, but the right time for non-blockbuster releases to carve out their niche. Olivia Wilde's 1950s-set psychological thriller claimed the top spot in the absense of major releases, and the re-release of James Cameron's 2009 blockbuster "Avatar" landed in third place.

The thriller "Don't Worry Darling" opened in first place with $19.2 million from 4,113, which is on the lower end of pre-release projections that were closer to $22 million. Overseas, the film raked in $10.8 million from 62 countries. While it didn't exactly blow up at the box-office, the film only cost $35 million to produce, so on those terms, it's a pretty solid hit. The critical reception was mostly negative (38% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers didn't seem to enjoy it much, either ("B-" CinemaScore).

Sony's historical action drama "The Woman King" dropped to second place with $11.1 million, a soft 41.5% decline from its opening weekend. The film's domestic tally is now at $36.2 million. Overseas it's not doing so great, with only $1.3 million, so far, but it hasn't opened in most major markets, yet.

The IMAX 3D re-release of 20th Century Studios' "Avatar" finished in third place with $10 million from 1,860 locations, on the higher end of pre-release projections of a $8M-$9M debut. Overseas, the re-release added another $20.5 million from 50 markets.

In fourth place we find the horror film "Barbarian" with $4.8 million, dropping just 26.2%. The film has grossed a total of $28.4 million after three weeks, and $1.5 million overseas.

The Top 5 is rounded out by the horror prequel "Pearl" with $4.8 million, dropping just 26% from the previous weekend. So far, the film has grossed $6.6 million against a budget of $1 million.
