Four-time Oscar-nominated "Lady Bird" and "Little Women" actress Saoirse Ronan has signed on to star in Apple's World War II epic "Blitz", which is written, produced and directed by Steve McQueen ("12 Years a Slave", "Shame"). Apple beat the competition for rights to the film in June.
The film will tell the stories of a group of Londoners during the aerial bombing of the British capital during the war. Production is expected to begin later this year. Although her role has not been reveled, Ronan will star alongside an "unknown newcomer" that has yet to be revealed.
McQueen's production banner Lammas Park is producing alongside Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title Films, and Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer from New Regency, with independent producer Anita Overland. "Blitz" was developed and packaged by New Regency under McQueen's first-look deal. McQueen and New Regency previously worked together on the Best Picture Oscar winner "12 Years a Slave".
Ronan recently finished work on the Garth Davis movie "Foe", in which she stars opposite Paul Mescal, and is also set to star in the Scottish drama "The Outrun".
