Ryan Reynolds dropped the news via social media that "X-Men" film franchise star Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine in the upcoming Disney/Marvel sequel "Deadpool 3". The announcement also revealed the release date for the film which has been set for September 6, 2024. The X-Men franchise has officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe when Disney purchased 20th Century Fox.

The third installment will be directed by "Free Guy" and "The Adam Project" helmer Shawn Levy. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers of the first two "Deadpool" films, will return to write the third. Reese has previously confirmed that "Deadpool 3" will still be R-rated, despite being part of the family-friendly MCU.

Jackman's last appearance as Wolverine was in 2016's "Logan" directed by James Mangold. The 2016 and 2018 "Deadpool" movies were big hits at the box office, grossing a combined total of $1.56 billion, which is record-breaking for R-rated movies. Both "Deadpool" films and "Logan" premiered on Disney+ in July.
