Aubrey Plaza ("Emily the Criminal", "Parks and Recreation") has joined the cast of Francis Ford Coppola's new film "Megalopolis". The filmmaker's passion project is independently financed, with a budget reportedly just under $100 million. Coppola also penned the script.
The contemporary drama is set in a modern world, haunted by the fate of Rome, unable to solve its own social problems, and it follows an architect who wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia, following a devastating disaster. The film has been described as an epic story of political ambition, genius and conflicted love.
The cast also includes Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight and Laurence Fishburne. Production is expected to begin this fall. No release date has been set.
Cinematographer Mihai Malaimare Jr. is also confirmed to reteam with Coppola, following "Youth Without Youth", "Tetro", "Twixt", and the live cinema experiment "Distant Vision".
In a recent interview, Coppola mentioned that the film is "a love story", and added the following:
"A woman is divided between loyalties to two men. But not only two men. Each man comes with a philosophical principle. One is her father who raised her, who taught her Latin on his lap and is devoted to a much more classical view of society, the Marcus Aurelius kind of view. The other one, who is the lover, is the enemy of the father but is dedicated to a much more progressive ‘Let’s leap into the future, let’s leap over all of this garbage that has contaminated humanity for 10,000 years. Let’s find what we really are, which are an enlightened, friendly, joyous species."Plaza is also set to star in the second season of HBO's hit anthology series "The White Lotus".
