Robert De Niro to Star Opposite Himself in Gangster Drama WISE GUYS

Robert De Niro to Star Opposite Himself in Gangster Drama WISE GUYS
Robert De Niro is set to star in Warner Bros' upcoming crime drama "Wise Guys". The film will be directed by "Rain Man" and "Wag the Dog" filmmaker Barry Levinson. Levinson and De Niro previously worked together on "Wag the Dog", "Sleepers", "What Just Happened", and the HBO series "The Wizard of Lies".

The film follows Italian American crime bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, both played by De Niro, who ran their respective families during the 20th century. In 1957, Genovese tried (and failed) to assassinate Costello, who was ultimately injured and attempted to retire from the mafia.

"Goodfellas" co-writer Nicholas Pileggi is writing the screenplay. Pileggi also wrote the 1985 book that Scorsese's "Goodfellas" was based on, which was titled "Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family", as well as "Casino", which was also adapted by Martin Scorsese in 1995.

"Rocky" and "Goodfellas" producer Irwin Winkler will serve as a producer on "Wise Guys".

De Niro is set to re-team with Scorsese on the Western crime drama "Killers of the Flower Moon", and has also joined the cast of David O. Russell's crime drama "Amsterdam".
