Zendaya ("Euphoria") has signed, on and Josh O'Connor ("The Crown") and Mike Faist ("West Side Story") are in talks to star in MGM's upcoming romantic drama "Challengers". The film will be directed by Luca Guadagnino ("Call Me By Your Name") from a script by playwright Justin Kuritzkes.
The film focuses on the competitive world of pro tennis, in which player-turned-coach Tashi (Zendaya) has transformed her husband Art (Faist) into a Grand Slam champion. After a losing streak, Tashi enters him into a "Challenger" event — the lowest pro tournament level — where he must face off against Patrick (O'Connor), Tashi's former boyfriend and his former best friend.
The script was featured on the 2021 Black List, a ranking of the best non-produced script in Hollywood. Production is expected to begin this spring on the East Coast. Amy Pascal ("Spider-Man: No Way Home") will be producing via her Pascal Pictures alongside Zendaya and Guadagnino.
Guadagnino is currently in post-production on the cannibal drama "Bones and All" starring Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell.
