"Venom: Let There Be Carnage" exploded at the box-office with a $90.1 million debut from 4,225 theaters, the highest opening weekend in the pandemic era, outgrossing Marvel's "Shang Chi" ($75.4 million) and "Black Widow" ($80.4 million). While the "Venom" sequel is based on a Marvel property, the film is produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel and Tencent Pictures, and distributed by Sony. It's also not part of the MCU.
Overseas, "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" raked in another $13.8 million from overseas markets. The impressive debut is an even bigger success for the film because it reportedly cost $110 million to produce, which is around half the usual budget for one of these big superhero blockbusters.
The animated sequel "The Addams Family 2" opened in second place with $18 million from 4,207 theaters. It's a decent debut, but not as strong as the $30.3 million grossed by the first film when it opened in 2019.
Disney's "Shang-Chi" dropped a steep 53.7% in its fifth weekend, grossing $6 million. The film has crossed the $200 million milestone domestically, and raked in a total of $180.8 million overseas.
In fourth place we find Warner Bros' R-rated film "The Many Saints of Newark", which opened with $5 million from 3,181 theaters against a $50 million budget. Overseas it added another $2.3 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the musical "Dead Evan Hansen", which dropped a massive 67%. The film added only $2.5 million in second weekend, which brings its domestic tally to an anemic $11.8 million.
