Another slow September weekend at the box-office helped "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" hold the top spot, while Clint Eastwood's new film "Cry Macho" failed to stir up much interest.

"Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" continues to confirm that the theatrical experience can still be profitable even in these dark times. The film topped the charts for a third consecutive weekend with $21.7 million. The film has crossed the $300 million mark worldwide, beating Marvel's "Black Widow", which was released simultaneously via Disney+ for a $30 premium. The movie is still far from turning a real profit, however, because it cost around $200 million to produce, and probably at least another $100 million in publicity costs. So, at this point, we can say that the movie has managed to break even. Time will tell just how profitable it will end up being.

"Free Guy" continues to impress, returning in second place with $5.2 million. The film only dropped 6.8%, and after six weeks has raked in a total of $108.6 million domestically, and another $189.7 million overseas. A $300 million total for a movie that is not an established IP is not bad at all.

In third place we find the only new wide release, Clint Eastwood's "Cry Macho". The film opened with $4.5 million from 3,967 theaters, and also grossed a minor $350,000 from international markets. The film only cost $33 million to produce, but even that feels like too much with such a poor debut.

The horror reboot/sequel "Candyman" held in fourth place, grossing $3.5 million in its fourth weekend. The film only dropped 26.5%, and its domestic total has reached $53.2 million, while overseas it adds another $13.5 million. Solid numbers for a film that only cost $25 million to produce.

The Top 5 is rounded out by Warner Bros' horror film "Malignant". The film dropped 50.7% from an already disappointing debut, and grossed $2.7 million in its second weekend. So far, the film has grossed $9.8 million domestically and $14.8 million overseas. The bad news is that the film was made on a budget of around $40 million.
