Marvel's "Shang-Chi" is still on top in its second weekend, which turned out to be much quieter than expected. The only new wide release of the week, the James Wan-directed horror film "Malignant", failed to find an audience.

"Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" finished in first place and scored $35.8 million in its second weekend. The film dropped almost 53%, which is a lot, but on par with other Marvel releases from the pre-COVID era. And all this without releasing it simultaneously on Disney+. The studio is so happy with the results that they've announced last week that the rest of its 2021 slate, which includes Marvel's "Eternals" and Steven Spielberg's adaptation of "West Side Story", will each screen exclusively in theaters.
"Shang Chi" also raked in a total of $112 million from overseas markets, so far, which isn't particularly impressive. Disney was hoping for China to beef up the revenue, but recent controversy regarding comments originally made by star Simu Liu in 2017 may have compromised the prospects of a Chinese release.
In second place we find 20th Century Studios and Disney's "Free Guy" with $5.8 million. After five weeks in theaters, the film has grossed a total of $101.8 million domestically, and another $174.7 million internationally.
Warner Bros' horror film "Malignant" opened with a very weak $5.8 million from 3,485 theaters against a $40 million budget. That's surprisingly bad for a James Wan movie, who is famous for films like "Saw" and "The Conjuring". The film earned an additional $9.5 million from international markets.
At #4 we find the horror reboot/sequel "Candyman" with $4.8 million in its third weekend. The film dropped a steeper 53% this time, but it's still a big hit with $48 million grossed in North America and another $11.2 million overseas. And it only cost $25 million to produce.
The Top 5 is rounded out by Disney's "Jungle Cruise" with $2.4 million. The film's domestic total has reachedd $109.9 million, and overseas its tally has reached $86.9 million.
Meanwhile, Paul Schrader's thriller "The Card Counter" opened in eighth place with $1.1 million from 580 theaters, while the Christian documentary "Show Me the Father" landed in ninth place with a $700,000 debut from 1,073 theaters.
