Marvel's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" broke records during the extended Labor Day weekend, which is usually known to be relatively unprofitable for movies. Unlike "Black Widow", which was released simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+, for this movie Disney opted for theatrical exclusivity for its first 45 days.

The Disney/Marvel superhero flick "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" conquered the box-office with $71.4 million over the three-day frame and an estimated $83.5 million over the extended four-day frame from 4,300 theaters. Both time frames are record-breaking. The previous record holder was Rob Zombie's 2007 "Halloween" remake with $26.4 million for the 3-day and $30.6 million for the 4-day. It also grossed a more modest $56.2 million from overseas markets. China has yet to schedule a release date for the film.

"Shang-Chi" is also the second-largest weekend debut since the pandemic began, behind only "Black Widow" ($80.3 million), and the third-largest September debut, behind "It" ($123.4 million) and "It: Chapter Two" ($91.06 million).

In second place we find last week's #1 movie "Candyman". The horror reboot/sequel dropped 52% and grossed $10.5 million for the 3-day and $13.4 million for the 4-day. The domestic cume has reached $41.9 million in North America and $10.9 million overseas.

"Free Guy" finished in third place with $8.7 million over the weekend and $11.2 million over the extended frame. The film only dropped 33.8%. Domestically the film has grossed $94.3 million after four weeks, and another $147.4 million internationally.

At #4 we find Paramount's G-rated animated film "PAW Patrol: The Movie" with $4 million for the 3-day and $5.2 million for the 4-day, which brings the North American total to $31.5 million, while overseas it has raked in a total of $50.3 million.

Disney's "Jungle Cruise" rounds out the Top 5 with $3.9 million over the weekend and $5.2 million for the extended holiday frame. The film's domestic cume has reached $105.6 million, while overseas it has grossed $86.9 million.
