The animated family adventure film "PAW Patrol: The Movie", the action flick "The Protege", the horror film "The Night House", and the sci-fi thriller "Reminiscence" were all released over the weekend, but "Free Guy" is still the #1 movie. The competition wasn't as fierce as it looked, however. Out of the four movies, only "Paw Patrol" managed to score decent numbers.

"Free Guy" managed to hold the top spot over the weekend with $18.8 million in its second week. The film only dropped 33%, which is the best second-weekend hold for any wide release this summer, so far, and the best second weekend hold of Ryan Reynolds' career. The film has grossed a total of $58.8 million domestically and $53.1 million overseas.
The G-rated animated film "PAW Patrol: The Movie" opened in second place with $13 million from 3,184 theaters, which is pretty solid, especially considering that the film is also available via streaming on Paramount+. It also raked in another $21.5 million from overseas markets. The film only cost $26 million to produce.
In third place we find "Jungle Cruise", holding over from last week. The film dropped only 32%, grossing $6.2 million in its fourth weekend. The domestic total has reached $92.5 million, while overseas it has grossed a total of $81.2 million.
The horror sequel "Don't Breathe 2" landed in fourth place with $5 million after a steep 52% drop. The film has grossed a total of $19.6 million in North America, and another $7.5 million from international markets. The film's worldwide total of $27.2 million isn't so bad, considering its $15 million budget.
Not so impressive is MGM's Aretha Franklin biopic "Respect", which dropped 57% in its second weekend, rounding out the Top 5 with only $3.8 million. The film has raked in $15.1 million domestically and around $0.5 million overseas, which is pretty bad since the film cost $55 million to produce.
Next up we have three new wide releases that failed to find an audience. The first is Lionsgate's action thriller "The Protege" in seventh place with $2.9 million, followed by the horror film "The Night House" in eighth with $2.8 million, and the sci-fi thriller "Reminiscence" at #9 with $2 million. That last one is pretty painful since the neo-noir science fiction film starring Hugh Jackman cost around $68 million to produce.
