Weekend Box-Office: JUNGLE CRUISE Tops the Charts With $34.2 million Debut

The long-delayed adventure film "Jungle Cruise", Disney's post-"Pirates of the Caribbean" attempt to turn a theme-park ride into a money-making franchise, opened at #1 over the weekend against slim competition and managed to slightly surpass predictions. Meanwhile, A24's indie film "The Green Knight" opened in second second place, and the Matt Damon starrer "Stillwater" barely made the Top 5.

"Jungle Cruise", which was originally set for release in July 2020, finally opened in theaters and on Disney+, and scored a #1 debut with $34.2 million from 4,310 theaters. It also added a modest $27.6 million from 47 overseas markets, and an additional $30 million on Disney Plus.

That might not sound like much for a movie that cost $200 million to produce (before advertising costs), and it really isn't, considering that a behemoth like this needs to bring in at least $500 million globally to break even.

A24's R-rated medieval fantasy "The Green Knight" opened in second place with $6.78 million from 2,790 theaters. The film was not released internationally.

Extremely close behind is M. Night Shyamalan's "Old", which dropped from #1 to #3 with $6.76 million. The film dropped 60% from its opening weekend. So far, the film has grossed a total of $30.6 million domestically and another $17.9 million overseas.

Disney's Marvel movie "Black Widow" dropped another 44.7%, landing in fourth place with $6.4 million from its fourth weekend. The film's star Scarlett Johansson raised a legal dispute last week regarding Disney's hybrid-release model, alleging the studio's decision to premiere her Marvel film on Disney Plus on the same day as its theatrical debut was a breach of contract and cost her tens of millions in backend deals. At this time, "Black Widow" has grossed a total of $167 million in North America and another $176.5 million overseas, making it the lowest grossing entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The last of the new wide release, the drama "Stillwater" rounded out the Top 5 with $5.1 million from $2,022 theaters.

In other news, Paramount's "Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins" dropped a steep 70%, falling from #1 to #7, and only raked in $4 million over the weekend. With just $22.2 milion domestically and an even worse $6.5 million from international markets, all against a production budget estimated at around $100 million, the film is quite a big flop.
